Bummed Out

Writing advice is making my head spin

It’s hard not to get a little bummed out. Writing advice lately is all over the place. Write better and edit more. Break the rules and find your voice. Be an expert and make sure to cite your sources, but write in simple English for the many ESL readers who come to Medium to read. Cater to your audience, but don’t write what you think they want to hear.

Be raw and bold. Polished and assertive.

Write a ton. Write some more. But none of that matters unless you publish a lot, so do that, too.

Find a template from a successful piece and repeat it. Try something new because the old ways aren’t working anymore.

It’s truly bumming me out. All I really want to do is to start conversations. I want to share what I’ve been through and what I’ve learned because I think it can be helpful. I want to hear what has been helpful for others and expand my Life toolbox so that I can pass that on to someone else who might need to see it.

Okay, so what do I do with all that?! How about the ‘find a successful post and repeat it’ advice?

Want to know what gets me the most views and claps here on Medium? My comments on other people’s stories. My comments on other people’s stories about kids, to be exact. I find it interesting and enjoy…
