Made You Think
Sorry, a little late on the uptake…
Held my own today in a conversation with my boyfriend (well, this happened ‘the other day’, which means any day before today…)
I’m not great at arguing in the moment. My words come out too fast and with too much gusto- which is kind of exactly what my mind is doing, too. I hate that.
I do have an argument that he can engage with, so long as I can get out of my own way. Some onus on him, too, to bear some responsibility for the direction of the discussion.
Like I said, though, I held my own today, and I’m so happy for that. See, I’m disgusted that the voting rights act has yet to be reauthorized and reaffirmed in our country. After enjoying more than half a century of hard-fought wins, it looks like we are rolling backward in time.
The conversation took some turns and cycled back on itself- and it occurs to me that maybe this is what the country at large is facing. The stopping point of a discussion is not the end, and why are we teaching it that way? There is still work to be done!
Silence!
Steal the immediate moments after heavy discussion and reserve them for silence. This can be challenging. Mostly, we insert something new in that moment- a new trend, a new story, new news, new distractions.
