My X-MIL Died One Week Ago Today

And her (unintentional) grand act of kindness

“Come on, you wanna go? I’ll kick your ass you never took care of my son you brainwashed my grandbabies and won’t let them see their dad!”

That’s what she said…

Yeah, that was a bad joke- not at all appropriate. But what response would be? I don’t remember the exact words I used but I needed to get out of there as soon as I could. I’ve never been in a fight in my life and I wasn’t about to start with my X-mil! She could’ve kicked my ass, too, that much anger and vitriol laced with a chemical painkiller almost guarantees it.

How do you respond when, in a drunken tirade, your 60-something X-mil takes a boxer’s stance at you and asks for a physical fight?

That person died one week ago today. That encounter happened 5 years ago. One of the last encounters I ever had with her.

Our very last encounter was just over a year ago. She hissed at me with the same hatred, this time muted because we were in public. At my daughter’s graduation, a day for my daughter to enjoy some deserved attention. But they wrecked that, too, couldn’t just let her have her day.

Suffice it to say, there was no love lost between us.
