Mid-morning yesterday, my daughter and I were on a drive down to the barn where we board our horses (Ranch of Rescued Hope), so she could work with her horse in training. It takes about 40 minutes to get from home to ‘the ranch’.

My daughter will be 17 in less than a month, is way independent, and our schedules make it difficult to do dinners together. It’s one aspect of my motherhood that I felt I was shorting my children on- regular family meals and the benefits of them.

What I’m finding out is that we have found our ‘mealtime’… and it comes in the form of these rides down to the ranch and back. It is not every day, but it is regular.

I’m so grateful that she is in k12 online schooling and has this autonomy with her ‘education’ (that’s little ‘e’ education… the kind that’s mandated by law). It’s allowed for some ‘Education’ (big ‘E’, the kind that I value and want for my children).

We got to discussing the situation with her dad. When she brings up this situation, I let her lead and also try not to say much. I will, however, ‘walk with her’ and share my experience, as I do when we talk about other things.

She’s fresh off a reconciliation attempt with her father. It ended with her snapping on him, blocking him again on her phone, and then…
